Key Answers of Simple Past Tense Exercises

Which word is wrong?
Please correct these wrong sentences to be the right sentences!


1.    B  - “do not know” is wrong because it is not used for past form.
       Correct sentence: I did not know about it yesterday.
2.    B – “drinks” is wrong because it must be the second verb form, “drank”, used for past form.
       Correct sentence: Thomas drank a cup of coffee.
3.    C – “Police office” is wrong because it is not place where the postman worked.
       Correct sentence: The postman worked in the police office last year.
4.    B – “was” is wrong because the subject is plural that must be followed by “were”.
       Correct sentence: Bona and Boni were in Surabaya yesterday morning
5.     B – The right second verb of “eat” is “ate”, not eated.
        Correct sentence: Rani ate a plate of rice two hours ago.
6.     D – “tomorrow” is not the adverb of time for past tense, but for future.
        Correct sentence: Faris bought a car yesterday/two days ago, last year/etc. (adverb of time for past  time)
7.    B – The right second verb of draw is drew, not drawn.
       Correct sentence: Serli drew a picture a minute ago.
8.    C – The right place for soup is not plate, but bowl.
       Correct sentence: Viona made  plate of soup yesterday afternoon.
9.    B – “was not” is wrong because “to be” is just used when the sentence is not followed by the verb use.
       Correct sentence: Nia did not wash his hand last night.
10.  C – The negative form of past tense uses the first verb, not the second verb.
       Correct sentence: Rosa did not sing a song last month.

12.  C – The right place for toothpaste is a tube, not a bottle.

17.  B – “maked” is wrong because the right second verb of make is “made”.
       Correct sentence: You made a cake yesterday afternoon.
18.  D – many ships can be found in the harbor, not railway station.
       Correct Sentence: I found many ships in the harbor yesterday.
19.  A – “There are” is wrong because it is simple past tense for singular, so the right one is “there was”
       Correct sentence: There was a bicycle in my house last week.
20.    A – “Some banana” is wrong because the right one is “some bananas” because it is plural.
         Correct sentence: Nova ate some bananas last Friday.

Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense is grammatical tense used for locating event or activity in the past.

 If there is a verb, the formula is:



Adverb of time  => ago, last, yesterday, etc.
 




 Examples: 
  
(+) Weni won the competition yesterday.
(-) Weni did not win the competition yesterday.
(?) Did Weni win the competition yesterday?

If there is no verb, the formula is:








Examples:

(+) My father was a doctor five years ago.
(-) My father was not a doctor five years ago.
(?) Was my father a doctor five years ago? Yes, he was/No he was not.

Verbs used in Past Tense are divided into two, they are  regular and irregular verb.

Irregular Verb

Examples:

See           Saw        Seen

Regular Verb – It is followed by the use of -ed

Examples:
Cook   Cooked   Cooked

Regular Verb with the last letter ‘Y’

•    If the last letter of verb is “y”, and before “y” is a vocal letter, it is added by the use of “–ed”

Examples:

Stay    Stayed    Stayed

•    If the last letter of verb is “y”, and before “y” is a consonant letter, the “y” is changed by the letter “i”, and then add “ed” after “i”.

Simple Present Tense

Present Tense is a tense used for locating event or activity that is happened in present time.

  • If it is followed by verb, the formula of simple present tense is:

 








Adverbs of time => Today, every day, etc.
 

It also generally uses words, such as always, usually, often, seldom, etc
 

 Notes: Verb + s/es is just used for singular subject (she, he, it)


Verbs are added by the use of –s if the last letter of the verb is “e”, “d”, “t”, “l”, “p”, ”n”, “g”, “b”, “k”, “g”.

For examples:

Cook – cooks
Clean – cleans
Read - reads

Verbs are added by the use of –es if the last letter of the verb is “o”, “ch”, “ss”, “sh”, “x”, ”z”,

For examples:

Watch- watches
Wash –washes
Mix - mixes

Certain rules of verb in which the last letter is “y”

- If the last letter before “y” is a vocal letter, we just need to add –s after “y”

For examples:

Buy – Buys
Play – Plays
Say – Says

-    If the last letter before “y” is a consonant, we need to change “y” into “i”, and then add –es after “i”.

For examples:

Dry – Dries
Fly – Flies
Cry – Cries

Example of simple present tense with verb: 

(+) Vina usually waters the flower every afternoon.
(-) Vina does not water the flower every afternoon.
(?) Does Rina water the flower every afternoon?  Yes, she does/ No, she does not

Key Answers of Present Continuous Tense Exercises

Which word is wrong? Please correct these wrong sentences to be the right sentences!

1. A - The verb "play" is wrong because we have to remember that it is present continuous tense, so the verb must be plus -ing after to be.
 Correct sentence: We are playing football now.
2. D -"Tomorrow" is wrong because it is the adverb of time used for future tense.
Correct Sentence: Are you reading a horse now?

3. C - "A orange" is wrong because "A" is just for word in which the first letter is vocal.
Correct sentence: I am eating an orange now.
4. A - "is" is wrong because the subjects are more than one, so it must use "are"
Correct sentence: My mother and my father is watching TV now.
5. A - "Does" is wrong because it is just used for simple present tense.
Correct sentence: Is she reading a novel now?
6. A - We have to remember that we have to use "to be" after subject before the use of verb.
Correct sentence: You are studying Math Now.
7. B - "does not" is wrong because it is just used for simple present tense.
Correct sentence: Roni is doing his homework now.
8. A - yesterday is wrong because it is used for past time.
Correct sentence: Now, I am making a cake.
9. C - "two bread" is wrong because "two" is plural, so the noun must be plus -s.
Correct sentence: I am baking two breads now.
10. C - "flower beautiful" is wrong because it has incorrect wrong structure. The adjective must be located before noun.
Correct sentence: Lina is buying beautiful flower now.
